Mathematics

Mathematics enhances our understanding of the world by developing student's skills in observation, investigation, abstraction, representation and generalisation. Our role as mathematics educators at Mount Carmel Catholic College is not only to develop these skills but develop a student's enthusiasm for mathematics and understanding of mathematics outside the classroom.

The mathematics faculty at Mount Carmel Catholic College aims to provide a positive, open learning environment with high standards for both students and staff where students:

  • develop a love and enthusiasm for mathematics.
  • gain a deeper level of understanding of mathematics.
  • see the relevance of mathematics outside the classroom.
  • achieve to their learning potential.

By studying Mathematics in stages 4 and 5, students learn to work mathematically, developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The following strands are central to Years 7-10 Mathematics:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

Within these strands they will cover a range of topic areas including financial mathematics, algebraic techniques, equations, linear and non-linear relationships, surface area and volume, properties of geometric figures, trigonometry, data collection and representation, data analysis, and probability.

Stage 4

Students in Stage 4 (years 7 and 8) are placed into classes for Mathematics based on their ability level and the necessary requirements to best support their learning. Stage 4 contains structured, core and extended classes. All students are assessed on their ability to communicate and demonstrate skills in mathematics as well as their ability to problem-solve. Stage 5

Students in Stage 5 (years 9 and 10) are placed into classes for Mathematics based on their ability and performance level in Mathematics. Classes are taught in either the 5.3 (Advanced), 5.2 (Intermediate) or 5.1 (Standard) mathematics pathway. At a fundamental level, all students will complete the 5.1 pathway and those in 5.2 and 5.3 will go on to extend their understanding of further concepts. Students will be assessed based on the level made available to them. Further information regarding assessment is made available to all students in their assessment handbook.

Stage 6

The Mathematics Stage 6 syllabuses are designed to offer opportunities for students to think mathematically. Mathematics forms part of a ‘well-rounded’ education. It is not compulsory in Years 11 and 12, but we believe that the study of mathematics at any level provides people with problem solving skills that can be applied to numerous situations. Students are advised to choose a mathematics course that is appropriate to their interests and abilities and will provide a solid foundation on which to enter the workforce or further education.
